MERRY CHRISTMAS: Greensleeves by Vince Guaraldi Trio - A tradition in my house as well as a tradition on this blog (here, here, and here), Vince Guaraldi Trio’s A Charlie Brown Christmas is THE Christmas album to end all Christmas albums.  There will invariably be other selections during the day, many worthy songs and artists and records, but none reach the pinnacle of greatness that this album does in creating a holiday spirit without any of the vapidness that usually accompanies such themed music.

Greensleeves, like many other traditional Christmas tunes, is derived from much older folk songs, this one being English.  There are various stories attached with the tune, many quite a bit ribald in nature.  By the 19th century however, this had become a standard caroling tune, albeit with varying lyrics.  As for the version by Guaraldi, it floats in the air, ever present but never intrusive, beautiful but never showy, melding so well to the scenes it accompanies in the classic Peanuts cartoon.  Have yourself a Merry Christmas and a joyous holiday to all!
